Modding - JSON Files
Before You Start!
Ty-dere's Golden Rule of JSON Modding: Use your backups, NOT your Students.JSON in the Yandere Simulator's StreamingAssets folder.
Alex's Golden Rule of JSON Modding: Copy-paste your JSON file, rename copy to "JSON Type - Backup" and in case something goes wrong, rename the bugged JSON file to "JSON Type - Bugged" and copy-paste the backup to bugged version's previous name and try recreating the JSON.
Before even starting to create your mod, backup your files and put the original somewhere safe where you can easily put it back into the game and won't forget where it is (desktop or a "modding" folder are good choices). Here is the layout of Ty-dere's backup JSON folders - if making more than 1 backup, make sure you put the JSON in separate folders
This image shows Ty-dere's backup files for Yandere Simulator. These backups are from the September 29th Build.
- Tip: Rename your folders after mods you are using. I have not done this in the picture as the "Used Backup" is a mod I have not released.
JSON Editors
- Web Editors: JSON Editor
- App Editors: Notepad, Notepad++
Ty-dere recommends using JSON Editor and AlexTheTech recommends using Notepad++.
Warning: The wiki is not affiliated with this website or any programs mentioned. They're third-party programs and we don't have control over it. Use at your own risk!
Getting Started
After choosing your work environment, identifying elements of the JSON file is important, but also knowing shortcuts and tips to make your work more efficient! Here are some tips from fellow JSON modders:
- Tip (Ty-dere): Use the right-hand side! It has a cleaner interface for you to work with!
- Tip (Yulla Le~ Fab): Instead of reading the Destinations and Actions side by side, imagine them horizontally. I personally find it easier to read and connect them together.
This is what the editor will look like after importing Yandere Simulator files:
- Note: In current builds, punctuation errors in the JSON files will give the player an error message upon spawning at school and you will spawn as Pink Yandere-Chan. If this happens, check for extra/missing colons, quotation marks, or periods, and make sure all info is valid.
Key Information
Name
Displayed on student info screen and other screens that display the student's name. Anything that is typed will become the student's name.
Notes:
- Naming a student "Unknown" or "Reserved" will cause them to not spawn when the game starts. Changing their names away from this will make them spawn again. Attempting to spawn Osana by changing her name from "Reserved" to something else will cause Fun Girl to appear instead. The slots left for Raibaru and the remaining rivals will not spawn any students although they already have names entered. Changing a student's name to "Unknown" or "Reserved" does nothing in the official demo builds.
- If a male student is named "Delinquent" they will have an angry facial expression, and carry around a pipe identical to the one that Dandy Pompadour has. This no longer applies in the official demo builds.
- Naming a student "Random" will spawn a random generated Student, just like the High Population mode, the game automatically chooses Name, Gender, Personality, Strength (if the randomized student has the Heroic persona), Hair, Skin Color (if male) and Hair / Eye Color. The randomized student will patrol the school.
Real Name
Displayed on student info screen under the student's nickname. Anything that is typed will become the student's real name.
Gender
If you put another number besides 0 and 1 in this section, all the students and faculty members will disappear and the JSON alert will spawn on Yandere-chan.
Since male and female models have a different set of animations, giving a student certain animations in their schedule may cause them to bug out. (male students don't have an animation for texting, and will glitch if you add texting as part of their schedule.)
If you attempt to change one of the Sports Club's Gender, they will end up having a bugged out gym uniform when they get changed in the male locker room.
Gender | ID |
---|---|
Female | 0 |
Male | 1 |
Class
Inputting an invalid ID will cause the student to become bugged.
Class | ID |
---|---|
1 - 1 (Reina Nabatame's Class) | 11 |
1 - 2 (Natsuki Aburaya's Class) | 12 |
2 - 1 (Rino Fukahori's and Ayano Class) | 21 |
2 - 2 (Shiori Rikitake's Class) | 22 |
3 - 1 (Karin Hanabusa's Class) | 31 |
3 - 2 (Kaho Kanokogi's Class) | 32 |
Notes:
- Inputting 0 as the class will make that student tell Kyoshi about corpses if they are a Teacher's Pet.
Seat
As of the November 15th, 2016 build, you can send students to different seats. Below is an image showing the seat IDs, what seats are occupied in the vanilla version of the game and what seats are not occupied in the vanilla version of the game.
Inputting an invalid ID will cause the student, as well as all of the teachers, to disappear. Giving more than one student the same ID may cause bugs when the students attempt to sit.
Here is a seating chart of the students as of the September 18th, 2019 Build (although the remaining 9 rivals cannot be added to the game currently, by viewing the JSON and YandereDev's videos, their seat locations can be confirmed that way unless they are changed in the future).

Club
Club | ID |
---|---|
No Club | 0 |
Cooking Club | 1 |
Drama Club | 2 |
Occult Club | 3 |
Art Club | 4 |
Light Music Club | 5 |
Martial Arts Club | 6 |
Photography Club | 7 |
Science Club | 8 |
Sports Club | 9 |
Gardening Club | 10 |
Gaming Club | 11 |
Student Council | 12 |
No Club (Bullies) | 13 |
Delinquents | 14 |
Teacher (Faculty) | 100 |
Gym Teacher (Faculty) | 101 |
Nurse (Faculty) |
102 |
????? | Any invalid ID. |
Notes:
- Inputting an ID higher than 102 will cause the student to become taller and act as a teacher. (Female students only)
- Choosing the Occult Club gives male students a frowning face.
- Choosing the Teacher Occupation gives the student the teacher model and behavior.
- Choosing the Gym Teacher Occupation gives the student the gym teacher model, animations and behavior.
- Choosing the School Nurse Occupation gives the student the school nurse model and behavior.
- Choosing the Student Council (for the wrong students) will make the student buggy; they have an all white uniform, lose their hair, may disappear randomly. The Student Council's unique dialogue and animations are loaded based on their IDs, and the game will fail to load any for other students as there are none associated. It is less buggy for male students in 1980s Mode, because they all reuse the delinquents' shoving animation and all have the same pepper spray animation. However, they will be bald, wear the Uniform 1 with the armband, and have white eyes. Female students in 1980s Mode will have the proper uniform and keep their hair, but don't have any dialogue or animations associated with them.
- Choosing the No Club (Bullies) (for the wrong students) gives the student tanned skin, this only works for IDs 81-85. A student who is in the bullies club and whose ID is not 81-85 will have white textures and be glitchy.
- Choosing Cooking (Buggy), Drama (White Eyes), Art (Accessory + White Eyes + Painter's Smock), Light Music (Buggy White Uniform), Science (White Eyes + Science Uniform), Sports (Buggy, Fly in the air), Gardening (White eyes and has a white flower pot), or Gaming Club (white eyes), or the Delinquents (for the wrong students) will make the student buggy. The game will attempt to load a unique accessory (for clubs, such as the Science Club's roses)/Flowers (for Gardening Club) exclusive to the student's ID, but they will not have one. The Occult, Photography and Martial Arts Clubs' accessories are not ID-based and those clubs can be used on any student.
Persona
Persona | ID | |
---|---|---|
Loner When a Loner student discovers a corpse, they will flee the school in fear and call the police. When they find Ayano committing a murder, they will repeat the protocol for discovering a corpse |
1 | |
Teacher's Pet When a Teacher's Pet student discovers a corpse, they will run to the Faculty Room and report to their teacher the corpse they discovered. When they find Ayano committing a murder, they will repeat the protocol for discovering a corpse. If Ayano hides the corpse before the teacher comes to the body the teacher will say "So, was this just a prank? I don't think it's very funny. Don't waste my time like this again." and the student will have "bullied" walk animations afterward. |
2 | |
Heroic When a Heroic student discovers a corpse, they will run to the Faculty Room and report to their teacher the corpse they discovered. When they find Ayano committing a murder, they will attempt to apprehend her. If Ayano hides the corpse before the teacher comes to the body the teacher will say "So, was this just a prank? I don't think it's very funny. Don't waste my time like this again." and the student will have "bullied" walk animations afterward. |
3 | |
Coward When a Coward student finds a body, they will flee the school in fear and call the police. When they see Ayano committing a murder, they will plead for mercy and run out of the school without calling the police. They do not count as a witness for the police or lower Ayano's reputation if left alive. |
4 | |
Evil When an Evil student discovers a corpse, they will flee the school and call the police. When an Evil student sees Ayano committing murder, they will grin and run out of the school. When they find a corpse, they will be amused by it, then they'll run out of the school. They won't call the police under any circumstance. |
5 | |
Social Butterfly When a Social Butterfly student finds a body, they will scream and run to their crowded spot and call the police or hide. When they see Ayano killing, they will do the same thing. If they see you approaching they will scream alerting others to your presence. |
6 | |
Lovestruck When a Student with the Lovestruck Persona finds a body, she will run to Senpai, tell him what she saw and they both run out of the School and call the Police. If a Lovestruck sees Ayano killing, she will run to Senpai and tell him what you did, if she reaches him, you will get an Instant Game Over. |
7 | |
Dangerous
The Student Council member's persona they will pepper spray you and immediately take you down if you get too close 3 or more times, approach them with a w,eapon or if they see you kill someone. If they discover a corpse, they will call a teacher and stand there to guard with them as well. If a teacher has already been called, they will stand near the body to guard it. They will send Ayano to the Guidance Counselor if she is acting suspicious. |
8 | |
Strict Persona
When a Strict Personality type finds a body they will mourn the death and call the police and guard the corpse. When they see Ayano killing, they will try to apprehend her. They will send Ayano to the Guidance Counselor if she is acting suspicious. |
9 | |
Friendly but Strict and Slightly Strict
Same as Strict (Club 100) |
9 | |
Phone Addict
When a Phone Addict finds a corpse they will snap a photo and send it to the police, triggering the police timer. If Ayano can be seen as the murderer in the picture, it will cause an instant Game Over instead. |
10 | |
Fragile
A Fragile student reacts the same way as a Coward to murder and corpses. They can be broken into committing murder-suicide. |
11 | |
Spiteful
When a Spiteful student witnesses murder or finds a corpse, they will run out of school and call the police. If they witness the death of a student with low reputation or a bully while they are being bullied, they will grin, run out of the school and won't call the police. They do not count as a witness if they do not like the murdered student. |
12 | |
Sleuth When atmosphere is high, Sleuths will react to murder or a corpse by going to a safe space and calling the police (like the Social Butterflies). If atmosphere drops to 80% or below, they will patrol all around the school checking on every student, if they witness murder or discover a corpse, they will take a picture and run away (like the Phone Addicts). If they witness Ayano commiting murder, but Ayano manages to hide all evidence, the next day the witness(es) along with the Photography Club (IDs 56-60) will start following you and will run away if you get close. If they witness another Photography Club member (IDs 56-60) being murdered, they will apprehend Ayano instead. ID 56 will act like a Heroic student instead of a Social Butterfly when witnessing any murder at high atmosphere. |
13 | |
Vengeful (Not Functional)
This persona is not unimplemented. (In the future, if a student witnesses you murder a loved one or a family member, and you get away with it, they will start following you until they witness you commit murder again. They will snap a picture if they catch you doing so.) |
14 | |
Protective
If a female student with this personality and "Invincible" strength witnesses murder or discovers a corpse, they will go to apprehend you without any kind of struggle. If they have a strength level under Invincible and they try to apprehend Ayano/Ryoba, they will instead be killed by whatever weapon the player is wielding. If you try to attack or sneak kill a Protective student, they will prevent the attack and apprehend you without any struggle (only if they have the Invincible self-defense, otherwise you'll kill them). |
15 | |
Violent
The delinquents' personality. It only works on IDs 76 to 80 (The delinquents' IDs). If you use it on any other student, they will stand in the same spot forever and have spasms. If Ayano gets too close to them, they'll push her away. If they push her too many times, or she get close with a weapon, a fighting mini-game will begin. If she wins, they will be unable to attack her unless they witness her killing someone. If she loses, she will be beaten up and it will be easier for them to cause a Game Over if they witness her killing someone. If they witness Ayano murdering someone, they will run toward her and initiate the fighting mini-game, but will not stop if she is beaten up and causes a Game Over. If she wins the mini-game, they will continue to attack her until they are killed. |
16 | |
Snitch
This persona is exclusive to 1980s Mode If they discover a corpse, they will run to the faculty room and call the police on the landline phone If they witness murder, they will follow the same protocol, but will scream if they see you. If you make a 202X student a Snitch, they will freeze in place if you point your camera at their face. |
17 |
Notes:
- Putting an invalid ID will make the student bug.
- As of the June 18, 2019 Build, giving a student Persona 15 will trigger Fun Girl instead of starting the game - this no longer applies in the official demo builds.
Crush
Inputting an invalid ID will cause the student's info screen to go blank.
Crush | ID |
---|---|
"No Crush" | 0 |
The name corresponding to the ID | 1 - 98, 100 |
"?????" | 99, any invalid ID. |
Notes:
- ID 99 is Kocho Shuyona (the school's headmaster), but the Student Info Screen won't display his name upon the input but rather the question marks, as suggested in the table above.
Strength
Inputting an invalid ID will cause the student to become bugged.
Giving a student the "Extensive Self-Defense Training" self-defense level will cause the student to be strong as a teacher, though they still won't be able to deflect any attacks.
The '99' Self-Defense is Stun Gun only for the headmaster, for normal students, it is "?????"
Self-Defense | ID |
---|---|
"Incapable" | 0 |
"Very Weak" | 1 |
"Weak" | 2 |
"Strong" | 3 |
"Very Strong" | 4 |
"Peak Physical Strength" | 5 |
"Extensive Self-Defense Training" | 6 |
"Armed with Pepper-Spray" | 7 |
"Armed" | 8 |
"Invincible" | 9 |
"???" | 99 |
Appearance
Breast Size
Only available for female students.
Breast size is the size of female students' breasts. Kokona Haruka and Mai Waifu have the biggest breast size in the game (2), while Yui Rio has the smallest size (0.5), everyone else is in between. Realistic Students Tip: Do not go above 2 or below 0.5!
Student(s) | Size |
---|---|
Yui Rio | 0.5 |
Most Female Students | 1 |
Musume Ronshaku and Sakyu Basu | 1.5 |
Kokona Haruka and Mai Waifu | 2 |
Hairstyles
Note: If you lose sanity, A student with an edited hair colour using the JSON files will instead change into the original hair colour.
Male Hairstyles
These hairstyles are available for male students only.
Notes:
- Using the color "None" (or an invalid color ID) on Hairstyle 19 gives the student dark skin, most likely because the ID is the same as Musume Ronshaku's.
- Using the color "None" (or an invalid color ID) on Hairstyle 23 will give the student orange cat eyes.
- Using the color "None" (or an invalid color ID) on Hairstyle 24 will give the student dark purple eyes.
- Leaving the hair section blank will cause a male student to have the hairstyle that was put in the game last, have a beard, wear sunglasses, have earrings, and when they change shoes their hand texture will become bugged, this also applies to female students.
- If you attempt to use Hairstyle 1-6 and 15-26 will make the hair color white, since it needs one of the colors in-game for it to have a color.
Female Hairstyles
These hairstyles are available for female students only.
Notes:
- Hairstyle 5 and 6 will stay the same color regardless of if the JSON says a different color or if the player has killed someone.
- A female student will not spawn if the hair ID is 20, Unless you delete the ”NobodyScript” and the "OtherScript" in the Assembly-CSharp.dll - this no longer applies in the official demo builds.
- As of the June 18, 2019 Build, giving a student Hairstyle 21 will trigger Fun Girl instead of starting the game - this no longer applies in the official demo builds.
- In older builds, CousinHair has a bugged ID and will not work with JSON Modding. This bug has been fixed after 1980s Mode's release.

Hairstyle Colors
Basic Hairstyle Colors
These are the hairstyle colors that are available for all students.
Notes:
- Black may appear charcoal gray on certain hairstyles.
- If you add a color on a hairstyle with unique colors (For Example: Supuna Churu's hair), colors might be kind of mixed.
- If you add a color onto a hairstyle, Losing Sanity causes the hairstyle to go back to the original colour.
- If you add one of these colours onto an Art student's hairstyle, It will only change the accessory colours. (Except Maka)

Special Hairstyle Colors
These colors only work with their own corresponding hairstyles. They cannot be applied to any other haircut. Using a basic color on hairstyles with a special base color will result in unique color combinations. As of the most recent builds, special colors are equivalent to the "None" hair color.
Notes:
- Special hairstyle colors might have additional effects (Example - using Ganguro1 color on hairstyle 26 gives the student tanned head and makeup).
Eyes
Eye Colors
Notes:
- As of the March 28th build, the player has the ability to change students' eye colors by their preference. Using student-specific eye colors on the wrong student will give the student grey eyes instead.
- As of the May 2019 Builds, attempting to use any of the colors will work but when you murder someone, their hair would turn back into the color that was there before.

Stockings
Stockings are available for female students only.
Notes:
- As of March 8, 2017, the player is able to add custom stockings to a female by creating a texture inside of the streaming assets folder. In the July 28th, 2017 build, you can add ten custom stockings, they must be named "CustomNumber" with a number from 1 to 10.
- As of the March 30th, 2022 Build, students' panty colors are randomly chosen, unless they have custom stockings assigned to them.
Accessories
Notes:
- If you change it to "None" the student spawns with Kuu Dere’s hair, Kizana's necklace, the friendship bracelet, the bullies' wrist scrunches, and white eyes.

Teacher Accessories
These accessories are available for teachers only - like for teacher hairstyles, they can be given to students by modifying game's Assembly-CSharp script or by PoseMod.
Club Accessories
These accessories are given to students who are a part of a club.
Schedules
Schedule Time
Schedule Time are the values that determine until when will a certain action in the schedule be done.
Schedule Time values are divided by underscores (_) and keep in mind that if one is missing, the game will bug out (I think that you can check validity of JSON file on JSON Formatter).
.05 (or 5%) is equivalent to 3 minutes in Yandere Simulator which means that .5 (or 50%) is equal to 30 mins in-game - you can calculate custom values by a chart for minute-to-decimal conversion or by proportion calculator by template 1 / 60 = unknown value / wanted minutes.
Only 10 events are allowed in Students.json, meaning you can edit 8-6 events of your choice - 2 in case you just want the student to enter the school but not exit (like some clubmembers do) or 4 in case you want your student to leave school at a destined time.
Schedule Destinations
These are the locations you can place students in their schedule. I have not added Seat as there is a section explaining that.
Notes:
- If you replace the destination of a student that was supposed to be the one after "Locker", the student will do the animation at their locker instead of the designated area.
- Since the June 15 update, you cannot put "Hangout", "LunchSpot", and "Week2Hangout" on a student without one (or an Unknown student before all of them were implemented). Attempting to do so will cause bugs.
Examples:
- Example 1 - this is a changed schedule for Mai Waifu that I made, instead of going to eat at her seat, she will eat at her locker. (IDK if it's my computer or a bug, but it does happen so I noted it): "ScheduleDestination":"Spawn_Locker_Seat_Mourn_Podium_Slave_Locker_Exit","ScheduleAction":"Stand_Stand_Eat_Text_Socialize_Text_Shoes_Stand"}
- Example 2: "ScheduleDestination":"Spawn_Locker_Slave_Seat_Peek_Seat_Podium_Locker_Exit","ScheduleAction":"Stand_Stand_Text_Seat_Peek_Seat_Socialize_Shoes_Stand"},
Schedule Action
You can make a student follow a daily schedule by using the following animations.
Notes:
- Giving a male student a female student only animation will only make the edited student will walk in place and vice versa.
- June 28 build and on-wards, couples can't cuddle, they only walk while being attached to the bench.
- Giving the "Wait" animation to a student and doing Musume's task will cause them to use the smoking animation just like Musume.
- Giving a Student anywhere other than their destination "Seat" the action "Sit" will cause the Student to walk in place.
- These are all we are currently aware of, if you find any feel free to add them!
Additional Info
As of July 18, 2017, the additional information of all students are now editable through the Students.json file.
To make a sentence begin on a new line, type " \n \n " (including spaces) in front of the sentence that you want to begin on a new line.
Leaving the additional info blank will make the info in-game say, "No additional information is available at this time."
Do not put quotation marks in the additional info section, as they are used to separate parameters in JSON files. For example: They call him "the snake" because of his constant...
This will make the JSON invalid and you'll spawn as pink Yandere Chan. Instead, use apostrophes: They call him 'the snake' because of his constant...
- Helän Sehora says: Actually you can use double quotes! Just put a \ to the left of the double quote & it will work - they call him /"the snake/".

Disclaimer: You can ask for help in the comments below, but please, don't copy the entire JSON since it clogs up the comments and makes it tedious to scroll around.
Q: I didn't make a backup! What do I do now?
A: If you haven't made a backup, you can redownload the game and all the students will reset.
Q: How do you give students more hair and eye colors?
A: There are two ways: The first one is to edit the hairstyle's base texture (Visit the Modding page for more info), while the second one is to edit the game's Assembly-UnityScript.dll file (Visit the Modding: Assembly-UnityScript.dll page for more info).
Q: How do you edit the students' facial features/uniforms?
A: You cannot edit individual uniforms of students except for Oka, the Bullies, The rainbows 6, Midori, Horuda or Osana. You can edit facial features of any student by editing the base hair of the student in the Texture files via assets, but there is no other way except for what is listed on the Moddingpage.
Q: Fun Girl showed up when I launched the game! What went wrong?
A: You most likely made a punctuation error in the JSON file while you were editing. The more common errors include deleting a quotation mark, deleting a comma, and/or a punctuation mark changing font. To fix this error, replace the incorrect punctuation(s) with the correct ones by copy/pasting the correct punctuation instead of typing it out normally. You can check for incorrect punctuation by using CTRL F (Windows) or CMD F (Mac) and pasting the incorrect punctuation mark in the search bar.
Q: Can I ask someone to make me a portrait/custom stockings?
A: You can! However, it is no longer allowed to ask for those on this page. You can visit Useful Tools, at the end is a list of users you can ask to make whatever you need.
Q: What if I want to customize a female student’s panties?
A: You can make your own stockings (CustomStockings) and then in Students.json, student's stockings name write : CustomX (X- number. ex.Custom1).If you saved your stockings as ex.CustomStockings3 in Student's stockings name write : Custom3. REMEMBER TO SAVE CUSTOMSTOCKINGS AS PNG FILE. (CustomStockings Containts panties). You can also edit stockings by using SharedAssets.
Q: What if I want to customize a uniform, gym uniform or swimsuit?
A: You can go on the StreamingAssets then open the "How to make custom uniform", then it should prompt you to do it on Notepad. Follow the on-screen instructions of how to edit it, then you can open the Gym Uniform or a uniform/stockings to edit it, it will originally choose Paint, but you can change it to Photo Shop instead, after that, before you save it, i recommend making a backup copy of the uniform/stockings that doesn't have edits, after that, you can save yours on the original uniform, then rename it to (For Example: CustomGym) to show it up in the game.
